The Ongoing SEF

What is it and do we have to complete it?

The Ongoing Self-Evaluation Form

What is an Ongoing SEF?

An Ongoing SEF (Self‑Evaluation Form) is not a separate document or template. It refers to a school’s continuous process of reflection and self‑understanding as a Church of England school.

In practice, an ongoing SEF means that leaders and governors:

  • Regularly reflect on how the Christian vision is shaping school life
  • Know their strengths and areas for development
  • Use self‑evaluation to inform next steps and improvement
  • Can speak confidently about impact over time

This reflection will often be evident through normal leadership activity, such as:

  • Strategic discussions
  • Governance oversight
  • School improvement planning
  • Curriculum and worship review

Do we have to complete an Ongoing SEF?

Yes – however, SIAMS does not require schools to complete:

  • A specific ongoing SEF template - although one is provided here: Inspections — National Society for Education
  • A written document labelled “Ongoing SEF”

Schools are expected to be engaged in ongoing self‑evaluation as part of effective vision‑led leadership.

Inspectors will explore:

  • How well leaders understand their school as a Church school
  • Whether reflection is ongoing rather than last‑minute
  • How evaluation informs development and improvement

How is the Ongoing SEF different from a Summary SEF?

Ongoing SEF Summary SEF
A process A short, written overview
Happens naturally over time Often prepared closer to inspection
Embedded in leadership and governance Summarises current self‑understanding
Does not need a specific document Optional document
Explored through professional dialogue Can support inspection conversations

Which is more important?

The Ongoing SEF is more important.

SIAMS places greater emphasis on:

  • Living reflection, not completed paperwork
  • How leaders know their school over time
  • Honest understanding, not polished presentation

A Summary SEF can be helpful, but it is only useful if it reflects a strong ongoing process of self‑evaluation.

SIAMS is interested in whether you know your story, understand your impact, and are reflective about next steps.

Diocesan support

The Diocese of Chelmsford can:

  • Help schools understand what effective ongoing self‑evaluation looks like
  • Support schools in deciding whether a Summary SEF would be helpful
  • Provide guidance through workshops, training and professional conversations
