We encourage schools to provide a broad and balanced RE curriculum that enables pupils to engage deeply with Christianity alongside a range of religions and worldviews.
A high-quality RE curriculum should draw upon three complementary disciplines.
Theology: Exploring beliefs, teachings, sources of authority and how religious ideas have developed and been interpreted over time.
Philosophy: Exploring questions about meaning, truth, morality, ethics and human existence.
Human and Social Sciences: Exploring the lived experience of religion and belief and understanding how beliefs influence individuals, communities and societies.
Together these disciplines support the development of religious literacy and help pupils understand religion and belief in the modern world.
Within the Diocese of Chelmsford the following locally agreed syllabuses are used:
· Barking and Dagenham
· Essex
· Havering & Redbridge
· Newham
· Southend
· Thurrock
